Tale 1 of 120

The hours moved slow in the northern lands, where fingers of frost grasped at the Viking longship’s hull. Erik Frostbeard stood at the prow with wind-whipped hair, facing the tumbling blue—no mere sea, but a churning tapestry of memory and fate. Each foaming crest shimmered with icy blue and gold, like the glimmer of Valhalla glimpsed from afar.
It was not the journey he feared, but the spaces between—those moments when the sky and ocean blurred, and time begged to be counted by desperate hearts. The crew whispered of monsters lurking in the spray, but Erik knew the truer enemy: the creeping doubt within one’s own breast. For weeks their vessel had sailed farther north than maps dared draw, toward a kingdom spoken of as a myth—Niflheim, land of perpetual frost and timeless sleep.
On the tenth night, as the auroras wound their green ribbons across the sky, Erik took the clock from beneath his furs—a circle of painted wood his wife Drifa had made. “To keep you company when the world grows wide and empty,” she’d said, pressing a kiss to his brow. He watched the hands spin, marking hours not in fear but in hope: one day closer to returning, one tale further woven into the cloth of his life.
Then came the storm, a gale that splintered masts and sent waves curling higher than midnight’s crown. The clock slipped from his hands, striking the deck—a fleeting token amid the eternal blue. It might have been lost, but Erik clung to its image, carving it into his memory: a ship braving impossible waves against a swirling cosmos, steered not only by skill but by the beating of a steadfast heart.
When dawn broke and the voyage resumed, Erik’s men whispered of the odds they’d conquered. But all Erik thought of was the steady, even pulse of time—an unbroken circle, held in the palm of a loved one, carrying him forward, always forward, across the icy blue.
