The Winter Sea’s Gift
That icy winter, when frost traced silver runes on the window panes and the fire sang behind the stones, old Ingrid sat by the hearth, turning a small glazed ornament in her palm—a token kinsfolk said was carved from far-off shores beset by blue and glimmering waves. But the ornament’s motif, a Viking ship dwarfed by vast, sparkling surf, was more than mere Christmas trim. It was a story held tight in her heart, spun each Yule’s eve from memory and hope.
As a girl in the village by the fjord, Ingrid watched the longships push bravely from the shore, their wooden hulls straining against the tide. Her elder brother Erik captained one such vessel, eyes bright with dreams—of distant lands, spoil, and the wind’s briny song. Each time winter deepened, she would cast a sprig of holly into the sea, asking it to guard him on his wandering.
The year the tides ran silver with frost, Erik’s ship met the fury of a storm. The waves, cold as a giant’s wrath and crowned with icy spray, reared higher than song or saga had ever dared to tell. Yet inside the tempest, Erik beheld a vision only the wild-hearted know: the glint of home in every flake of snow, the memory of stories spun round a fire, the yearning for shelter and the taste of sweet bread.
So he sang—a chant to guide the ship and heart alike—his voice joining water and wind. And when the storm relented, depositing his battered crew upon a shore not their own, Erik brought with him a simple thing: a smooth round charm, shaped and painted by grateful hands to recall that night’s ordeal, the pale blue waves, the golden spray, and the miracle of return.
Ingrid, every solstice, hung it on the tree. And in the stillness, as the outside cold pressed against the walls, she whispered to her children and theirs: “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the song that carries us home through the wildest storm.”
Let this ornament be a reminder: Whether tossed by the world’s tempests or journeying toward a far-off shore, we weave our own stories into each winter’s night, glimmering quietly among spruce and candlelight.
