Tale 1 of 120

Deep within the ancient woods of the North, where the mists clung to the trees and moonlit water rested silent as glass, the people whispered of the Valkyrian Angel—a being neither wholly of Asgard nor Midgard, but born in the enchanted seam between realms. On certain evenings, when the sun’s last rays bled golden through the ancient pines, the Angel would appear at the heart of the forest, where a secret lake shimmered with unspoken magic. She stood tall and serene, her armor woven with threads of morning light and her wings arching behind her, vast as the sails of a longship at dawn.
Her name, lost to mortal tongues, was remembered only by wind and water: Astrid, the Candle-Bearer. In her delicate hands, she cradled a single burning flame—a candle that would never dwindle, whose light was given by the Allfather himself. This was no ordinary flame but the spirit-fire, said to guide the souls of fallen warriors back to the halls of their ancestors. Around her, in the gentle ripples of the lake, other candles floated—each one a soul she’d shepherded home through the tangled night.
The forest itself bowed in reverence at Astrid’s presence, its shadows fleeing before her soft golden glow. As she walked upon the water’s edge, the mist parted, and ethereal lights—a dance of fireflies or perhaps the wandering skjærs of the dead—lifted around her, weaving a silent tapestry of memory and longing. Each step she took brought her closer to the heart of the vale, and with her, hope rekindled itself amidst sorrow and loss.
On this particular night, a storm brewed far to the north, and distant thunder echoed off cold stone mountains. A young huntress named Freyja, who had lost her brother to the last great raid, crept between shadow and root, following the stories and half-remembered songs of her childhood. Upon the shore of the hidden lake, she found herself breathless and trembling, cloaked in the humbling majesty of the Angel’s radiance.
Astrid turned, her eyes ancient as the world, yet soft with infinite kindness. “Why do you seek me, mortal?” her voice shimmered like the current beneath ice. Freyja fell to her knees, tears mingling with the rain on her cheeks. She spoke of love and grief, of battles fought and brothers lost, her heart laid bare in the star-dappled gloom. She begged for her brother’s soul to find peace, to be led gently from the howling dark into the halls where heroes feast forever.
Without a word, Astrid extended the candle’s flame, which danced upon the trembling surface of the water, illuminating the huntress’s face. Around them, the other candles glowed a little brighter—a sign, perhaps, that her brother’s soul was somewhere in the gentle company of kin. Astrid raised the flame to the velvet sky, and for a heartbeat, a pillar of golden light lanced up through the treetops, a bridge between worlds that shimmered and faded.
Freyja felt the weight in her heart lessen, replaced by a warmth that would anchor her through every loss to come. The Angel spoke, “Know this, brave soul: none who are loved are ever truly lost. Carry your brother’s memory; you are now both torchbearer and shield.” As dawn pierced the forest canopy, the Angel was gone, her story woven into the morning mist, and the gleaming candle still reflected in the tranquil water.
Every year, on the night when the veil grew thin, Freyja returned to the lake—not to seek, but to remember. She would light a single candle, letting it drift across the surface as the sun set and the world filled with the hush of ancestral song. And sometimes, just sometimes, she glimpsed a pair of wings unfurling beyond the light, a silent promise that love and courage endure where magic and memory entwine.
